That
Yankee Cat: The Maine Coon Marilis Hornidge, 1992 (revised edition) This book's particular strength is its evocation of the breed's roots in Maine culture, with many fine tales about those wonderful "shags". Many pictures of Maine Coon cats, both historical and modern. The best book for stories and history of the Maine Coon cat. |

This
Is the Maine Coon Cat Reprinted in 1990, this book has actually not been updated (to our knowledge) since its original edition in 1983. A fine book for its time with many color illustrations of cats that grace our pedigrees now. Sections on showing practices and the like are a little out of date.

"How big do they typically get?"
A full-grown female typically weighs between 12 -16 pounds and males tend to be in the 17 to 24 pound range.
"Do they need much brushing like the Persians do?"
Maine Coons do not need much grooming and a bi-weekly combing is all that is usually required to keep the coat in good condition.
"I think my cat is part Maine Coon. How would I know?"
The Maine Coon is America's native longhair cat; it evolved naturally in response to the New England climate. Your cat's ancestors might be similar to the cats that founded the Maine Coon breed. However, it's impossible to tell from just looking at your cat if it is related to the Maine Coon or to any other breed. Because the Maine Coon is a natural breed and hasn't been bred to extremes, there are cats all over the world that resemble the Maine Coon. The only way to tell for sure if your cat is a Maine Coon is to look at the pedigree.
"Do Maine Coons come in other colors besides brown?"
Maine Coons come in a wide variety of color combinations, 87 to be exact!
